Windows PC Keeps Freezing? A Safe Troubleshooting Guide
A freeze can mean one app stopped responding, the whole desktop became unresponsive, or Windows restarted with an error. Note which one you see and what was happening just before it started.
First: protect unsaved work
If one app is frozen, wait briefly, then use Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager and close only that app if Windows responds. If the entire computer is unresponsive, avoid repeatedly holding the power button; a forced shutdown can lose unsaved work. Use it only when the PC does not recover.
Look for a repeatable pattern
Record the time, the app in use, whether the freeze happens during startup or gaming, and whether audio, mouse movement or the keyboard still works. A freeze in only one app points toward that app; system-wide freezes across different tasks may need wider diagnosis.
Check Windows reliability history
Search Start for Reliability Monitor or “View reliability history.” Look for red error markers near the time of the freeze and note the affected app or Windows component. This history can help distinguish an app crash from a system failure.
Check memory, disk and temperature clues
When the computer is responsive, use Task Manager to review memory and disk activity. Close a heavy app or browser tab and see if the issue stops. Make sure laptop air vents are not blocked. Repeated freezes with disk warnings, unusual drive noises, sudden shutdowns or very high heat can point to a hardware issue.
Update carefully
Install Windows updates and app updates from their official sources, then restart. If the freeze began immediately after a specific driver or update, note its name and date and check the device maker’s guidance. Do not use a bulk driver updater to replace unrelated drivers.
When to seek help
Back up important files if freezes are increasing, Windows reports disk errors, or the computer fails to start reliably. Repeated blue screens, burning smells, a swollen battery or unusual mechanical noises need professional attention.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my PC freeze but the mouse still moves?
An app or Windows component may be unresponsive while the input system still works. Check Task Manager and Reliability Monitor after the PC responds.
Should I reinstall Windows right away?
No. First identify whether the issue is isolated to an app, started after a change, or accompanied by storage or hardware warnings. Back up data before any reset or reinstall.
